Breaking the silence: Sen. Risa Hontiveros vigorously tackles VAW to BulSUans

Bulacan State University welcomed Hon. Risa Hontiveros for an 18-day campaign to end violence against women and children, as it is known as one of the most pervasive social problems in our country. According to the 2017 National Demographic and Health Survey conducted by the Philippine Statistics Authority, one out of four Filipinos ranging in age from 25 to 49 years old has experienced physical, emotional, and sexual violence from their husband or partner.

In line with this, Sen. Risa enlightened the BulSUans about the laws she had passed to end the violence against women, such as RA 11313, or the Safe Space Act, also known as the Bawal Bastos Law, which covers all forms of gender-based sexual harassment in public areas, privately owned spaces open to the public, and public utility vehicles.

Sen. Risa also took pride as she discussed how they abolished the recent Socorro cult headed by Senior Aguila. The said cult took the rights of women, such as their freedom to choose their husband, and there were also reported cases of sexual harassment. Upon investigation, they also found out about the violence against children, such as child labor and child marriage, and that the cult also took away their rights to education.

These are just some of the actions that Sen. Risa took to end one of the most pervasive social norms in our society.

"Sa bawat hamon ay mayroon tayong naging tugon," the Senator said.

At the end of her speech, Sen. Risa assures that she will continue to fight against violence, not just against women and children but also for all genders.

"Marami na tayong naipanalo, ngunit mas marami pa tayong maipapanalo king patuloy patayong maikikipaglaban para sa mga kababaihan at ating mga anak," Sen. Risa said at the end of her speech.
